The SOS Shelter is Broome County's sole domestic violence shelter, licensed by the New York State Office of Children & Family Services. The mission of the SOS Shelter, Inc. is to assist families who experience, or are threatened with domestic violence, and to increase the community's awareness of this pervasive problem. The primary focus of the shelter is to provide supportive and secure surroundings for a woman and her children, to facilitate their solution of the immediate problems, and to aid in planning for the long-term needs. The shelter itself can house up to 20 women and children per night. The SOS Shelter is a member of Broome United Way and is the sole licensed domestic violence and abuse shelter in Broome County..
